Jenny and Chris

Hello, last weekend Geri and I traveled to Huntsville, Alabama, to photograph Jenny and Chris' wedding. Jenny is the daughter of my step sister, Gail.
Click here for a short slide show. Wedding.
I lived in Huntsville for a few years while I was growing up. It was Geri's first trip to Alabama. The countryside reminded her of a Minnesota landscape - and the weather was definitely not as cold!
My step mother Kate, and her adult children Gail and Tom, showed us a great time. Thank you again!
The wedding was held at Hope Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception at the Holiday Inn Downtown.
I met up with Jenny and her bridesmaids early afternoon at the church to photograph their wedding preparation. Then we drove downtown to Big Springs Park for a photo session with Jenny and Chris.
The weather couldn't have been better. It was a beautiful, blue-sky, fall day as Jenny and Chris strolled around the lake enjoying a little alone time.
Back at the church, I photographed the bridal party and family history pictures, before the evening wedding ceremony so everyone could go straight to the reception. I also set up a large group photo at the front of the church after the wedding.
Jenny and Chris were introduced during their entry to the reception and headed straight to the dance floor for their first dance.
One of the most touching moments of the evening was when Jenny presented her mother, Gail, with a book of photos collected during her 27 years.
Thank you to everyone who made this a special day for Jenny and Chris.
Cheers, Kent

Chris and Taunya's Tampa Wedding

Hello, on Saturday, May 10, I photographed Chris and Taunya's wedding in Tampa, Florida. Chris is my nephew so it was extra fun hanging out with him as well as my mom and sister.
It was a beautiful day, hot, but not too hot and there was a nice breeze. The wedding and the reception were held at the Hilton Garden Resort.
After the ceremony we visited Lettuce Lake State Park for a quick photo session before dinner. Click here if you would like to see a slideshow. Chris and Taunya.
By coincidence, all the pictures I chose for my blog were shot in black and white.

Wedding Pictures of the Year 2007

Happy New Year! It's time for me to reflect on my images from the past year. This is a tradition that goes back to when I made my first portfolio in high school. Looking for the pictures that define my style is a labor of love.
In high school the purpose was to get a scholarship to college. It worked.
In college it was about grades, entering pictures of the year photojournalism contests, and getting my first job.
After graduating and getting my first job, I actually had my first staff job before I even graduated, I would enter annual POY contests and build a better portfolio each year.
Every two or three years I would get a better job because of my improved skills and imagery.
After I finally made it to an A-level newspaper, The Denver Post, I still performed my yearly personal reviews for contests. I managed to win my share of awards year after year.
Then for the first time, the purpose of this review process changed. It became a mid-career/mid-life assessment.
I began focusing more each year on different categories of photojournalism such as sports, hard news, or magazine stories.
When I left the newspaper industry and starting photographing weddings I quit entering the annual contests because there weren't any wedding photojournalism categories. So I would try to get my best weddings each year published in national wedding magazines.
Fast forward to 2007, this year I am doing two POY portfolios, one for weddings and one for my slice of life photography. I am not planning to enter any POY contests this year as my purpose is based on measuring my personal growth. How much fun did I have last year photographing weddings? How much fun did I have photographing personal projects and other jobs? I just finished my Wedding POY today. It was hard to edit my selections down to 120 images because of the blood, sweat and tears that went into each of these weddings. 2007 turned out to be a very good year for both the quality of my work plus I looked forward to every wedding. Please check back soon to see my Slices of Life POY post!

You may remember Roman and Jessica from their lifestyle photo session we did last fall when the leaves were changing colors in Rocky Mountain National Park. Click here if you would like to see that slideshow. Lifestyle engagement session.
Jessica worn her grandmother's wedding hat to go with their 1920's style wedding. And Roman's Czech heritage was honored with traditions such as having a candlelight ceremonial procession.
I enjoyed finishing my year with a small intimate wedding filled with lots of wonderful moments.

Italian Wedding in Tuscany

Benvenuto, I am not quite finished with Italy or our Italian friends! While we were in Cerreto Guidi, Daniele introduced me to his neighbor Sergio, whose daughter was getting married. Sergio invited me to photograph the wedding of Sandra and Filippo. So the next day I began documenting Sandra's wedding day as she prepared at home, before arriving at the historic Catholic church in town.
If you would like to see a slideshow of Sandra and Filippo's wedding day CLICK HERE: Sandra and Filippo's wedding. All of our slideshows require flash player. Download a free version here: flash player. I enjoy photographing weddings in different cultures, if I can arrange it. This was a perfect opportunity and I was given total access. After the wedding ceremony the couple was preparing for their exit from the church, so I walked ahead of them and waited outside with their family and friends. Suddenly the doors flew open, they rushed out and everyone threw multiple colors of rice. I was able to fire off two frames before it was over. It made one of the best exit pictures I've ever taken! I was picking rice out of the back of my head for the next week - no kidding! We then took some pictures in the older part of the church, and by old I mean 600 plus years. We followed their sports car through town as the church bells rang and on to the reception at an Agriturismo owned and operated by Filippo's family. I was able to photograph through the windshield as we drove through the beautiful countryside.
To everyone else this was just a normal Saturday and a typical wedding, to me it was like being Joe Montana playing football at the Super Bowl. I was surrounded by beautiful people, bathed in beautiful light, all day and into the evening.
About 11 p.m. I received a phone call from Luisa wondering where I was, and why I wasn't home yet. I laughed and said that I was having a great time, had a ride home and she shouldn't worry about me, as if I was her Italian son. One of these days I hope to get back there and photograph another wedding - or ten!
Ciao, Kent

Sara and Michael's Organic Wedding

Hello,
A couple of weeks ago my good friend and fellow wedding photographer, John Hudetz asked me to help him with a wedding at Sunrise Ranch near Loveland Colorado. John and I help each other with weddings from time to time. Hudetz Photography.
Sara and Michael's wedding was the most organic wedding I've ever witnessed. First of all it was out in a field about a half mile from the nearest building and there were no cars in site of the ceremony! Then Sara and her father rode up on horseback. The ceremony included dancing, singing, prayers, vows, rings, smoke, fire, kisses and much more. It ended with the couple running and jumping over a fire that was burning messages and prayers written to the couple by their guests.
Sara and Michael both work at Sunrise Ranch farming the land. They grew all the food that was served at the reception and even raised the lambs that were the main course. The toasts were given with homemade apple sider cider.
Their wedding really took me back to my Kansas Farmer roots. I would like to thank John, Sara and Michael for inviting me to be part of their wedding.
Cheers, Kent

Kim and Brent's Wedding at Hudson Gardens

Hello, I would like to introduce Kim and Brent who were married last Saturday at Hudson Gardens. Hudson Gardens. This might have been the most laid back wedding I've ever photographed! The couple didn't see each other until the ceremony in Monet's Place which was attended by about 30 family members and friends and ended in a tearful hug.
The reception was a casual affair held in the backyard of the couples home in Littleton. Since they didn't have dancing and other traditional reception events, I focus on getting interesting pictures of each of the guests relaxing.

Red Rocks Wedding

Hello, two weeks ago I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding with my good friend and fellow wedding photographer John Hudetz. Hudetz Photography. The ceremony was held at Red Rocks and the reception was at The Mount Vernon Country Club. Mount Vernon Country Club.
It was a beautiful blue sky Colorado day!
I started with the groom Romain, his family and friends mostly from France. Then we drove over to the Trading Post at Red Rocks. Red Rocks.
John showed up with the bride, Liz and her family.
The big challenge of the day was the fact that Romain who was born and raised in France came down with Bell's Palsy a few days earlier which made one side of his face paralyzed. Romain was a great sport about his condition and didn't make a big deal about it. John and I did our best to find good angles to photograph him from, lots of kissing etc.

Nina and Neal's Wedding

Hello, last weekend I photographed a Hindu wedding with my good friend and fellow photojournalist/wedding photographer, Joanna Pinneo. Joanna B. Pinneo.
I love to photograph ethnic weddings and this was my first Hindu wedding! The wedding and reception were at the Seawell Ballroom at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Denver. Hindu weddings are known for their length as in six days, three days etc. Our coverage of the ceremony and reception lasted 12 hours.

I stayed with Neal and his family as they prepared for the ceremony, while Joanna worked with Nina and her family. The first big event was called the Baraat, which is the arrival of the groom and his family to the wedding. Neal rode up on a white horse while his friends and family sang and danced.
Nina's family came down to greet them for a ceremonial welcoming. The party moved inside for the ceremony where Nina and Neal were separated by a curtain held between them, which was to remind them of their individuality. When the curtain is removed the couple exchange garlands signifying the beginning of the ceremony and the unification as one soul in two bodies.
There are many more significant elements to the Hindu ceremony and I am ony writing about a few. If you would like to see a slideshow of the wedding CLICK HERE: Nina and Neal's wedding. All of our slideshows require flash player. Download a free version here: flash player.
One most important part of the ceremony is when the groom ties the auspicious necklace around his brides neck. The necklace symbolizes love, integrity and good luck, and is the sign of being married.
For the Hindu, marriage is a sacred institution where the man and woman unite with each other physically, mentally, intellectually and spiritually. It is a sacrament, not a civil contract.
After the ceremony and family photos, the couple changed out of their traditional wedding clothes into evening reception attire. Indian music played as the sun set with a beautiful view of the Front Range mountains from the Seawell Ballroom windows. The party started when Nina and Neal's friends toasted the couple followed by hours of dancing.

I had the pleasure of photographing Jenny and Mathew's wedding at the St. Paul Catholic Church with the reception at the Broadmoor in Colorado Spring along with my good friends and wedding photographers Sean and Cathy Cayton.Cayton Photography
My favorite image from this entire wedding was when Jenny was standing alone in the hallway by herself before her parents arrived to walk her down the isle. She looked up into the light and boom it was over. When I ask her about that moment she said it was like talking with God.

First Wedding of 2006

Hello Kent here, I want to introduce you to Dave & Kathleen. One of their favorite things to do is eat and drink so we finished their lifestyle photo session at a very fun restuarant Lola's on South Pearl St. in Denver. Fast forward from there to The Oxford Hotel Jan. 6th. Dave saw
Kathleen all dressed for their wedding for the first time in the hall way to their suite. What a wonderful moment. From there they wanted to go to the Cruiseroom Bar in the lobby of the hotel. A very cool 50's style martini bar. What a great place to make pictures. I had wanted to do pictures in there for years and this was perfect. Then we did a few pictures out front of the hotel where Kathleen touched up her make up in the side miror of the Rolls Royce before going to the ceremony at The Holy Ghost Church. It was a long catholic service and the church was still all dressed up from Christmas! The receiption was held at Il Fornaio, a great Italian resturant around the corner from The Oxford. Oh and I almost forgot to mention the fact that Kathleen makes wedding cakes for a living! She had cakes on every table with table numbers, and a beautiful bigger cake in front of the fire place. Kathleen is a co-owner of Gateaux. Please see the link on the side if you need a specialty cake. One of the last pictures of the night cracked me up when I saw the ring bearer and a flower go up and sit at the bar while waiting for their parents. It was like seeing Kathleen and Dave as children.

Enjoy, and check out the link to see a slideshow of this amazing day! Kent
