Special Olympics Colorado State Basketball Championships

Basketball_6504

Last weekend I had the pleasure of photographing the Special Olympics Colorado 2012 State Basketball Championships at Gold Crown Field House in Lakewood.

True confession here, I’ve never really considered myself a sports photographer. Seriously! I’ve covered sports of all different levels from pro football to little league baseball and everything in between but I’m more of what I consider a feature photographer, or a personal photographer.

Documenting this tournament reminded me of why I enjoy photographing weddings. I get a front row seat. Actually, I got an all access pass allowing me to moved around a lot getting close to athletes and coaches just like I do with families at weddings. The honest emotions and feelings from this perspective feeds my soul.

Colorado Special Olympics Winter Games

Snowshoer_9368

A couple of weekends ago I covered the Colorado Special Olympics Winter Games. The ice skate events were held at South Suburban Ice Arena in Littleton and the skiing and snowshoeing events were held at Copper Mountain.

When I worked for the Denver Post, The Fort Collins Coloradoan or the Glenwood Post, this was the kind of assignment I always looked forward to because of the rawness, honest emotion and access to be close to your subjects. I’ve never hugged so many athletes at an event in my life.

Cheers to all the athletes and their families for opening up their hearts to me.

Margys Hut – 10th Mountain Division

Snowshoer

A couple of weeks ago we went on our annual 10th Mountain Division hut trip. This year we went to Margys Hut near Aspen with a group of 13 friends. It was a 6.5 mile ski/snowshoe trek and it took us about 5 hours! We used two snowmobiles to haul some of our gear/food/beverages etc. Still, it was a long, hard trip. The snowmobiles even got stuck several times in the deep snow and were tough to dig out.

The 4th of July Weekend in Denver

A man wears an American flag in his hair in Civic Center Park in Downtown Denver.

Happy 4th of July! This was the first weekend I haven’t had a wedding to photograph since April! I made the most out of it going ski mountaineering climbing Coon Hill at 12,757 feet elevation. We were able to skin up to the summit as well as ski down along a cornice ridge passing a herd of mountain goats on Friday. Sat, we went for a 28 mile bike ride that included Lookout Mountain and Mother Cabrini Shrine. Sunday we watch the Tour de France, the men’s final of the Wimbledon, and fireworks with the Colorado Symphony in Civic Center Park with about 25,000 of our closest friends. Today we broke out our new Big Green Egg, grill/smoker, to cook baby back ribs.

Cheers to a free world, Kent

Click here to see a short slideshow of Father John Nepil’s ordination celebration at Mount Vernon Country Club on top of Lookout Mountain. I came to know John thanks to his sister Katie whose wedding I will be photographing in July. Katie told me about her brothers ordination and asked me if I would photograph...
