WPJA and BRIDES Magazine winners

The results of the WPJA and BRIDES Magazine 2010 contest were announced recently and I place 1st and 9th in a category that is near and dear to my heart, Animals. This is a huge honor to be able to compete with the top wedding photojournalists worldwide.

A special thanks goes out to my good friend and fellow wedding photojournalist, John Hudetz, for having me as a quest photographer for the wedding in Breckenridge, Colorado where I made both of these pictures.

Sorrento, Italy Wedding

Photographing weddings when I travel is a great way to learn about other cultures. So I contacted a member of Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA), and Valerio Gargiulo invited me to photograph a wedding with him in Sorrento. This was the second time I’ve been able to photograph a wedding in Italy. Both times the photographers and videographers were permitted to photograph from up on the alter. Valerio pointed out to me that some priests will allow it while some may only allow a still photographer for specific moments. In this case Valerio asked for permission for me to also be able to photograph from the altar. Very few churches in the USA are willing to allow such access or even discuss the topic. Personally, I enjoyed have such access and hope that more churches here might consider granting better access during the ceremony.

The ceremony was held in the Sorrento Franciscan Church and the reception was held at the Imperial Hotel Tramontano both over looking the most beautiful part of the gulf of Naples.

A special thank you goes out to the bride and groom Anna Maria and Mario.

Welcome Home

Last week I had a wonderful time photographing one of my wedding couples from 2009. Here is a link to their wedding post. It was a combination welcome home from the war in Afghanistan and an after the fact engagement session. Brandon and Kristin were married last November in Estes Park. Five days after their wedding Brandon shipped out with the Wyoming National Guard. They had wanted to do an engagement session before their wedding but there just wasn’t time. We had talked about doing a session at the Downtown Aquarium, Denver since they both enjoy the ocean.

Kristin came up with a plan to surprise Brandon at the Airport in Denver by having me photograph as his family and friends greeted him arriving in the terminal at Denver International Airport. I really felt like I was a newspaper photographer again as his parents stood holding a University of Wyoming flag welcoming him home for two weeks leave before he goes back to searching for roadside bombs.

A couple of days later we did their belated engagement session at the Aquarium. I love to photograph couples in mind blowing visual locations that also have a personal connection. I feel honored that Kristin asked me to document Brandon’s arrival as well as hanging out with them at the Aquarium.

Scott and Amanda

Scott and Amanda were married at the Maroon Bells Amphitheater near Aspen August 7, 2010.

My first stop was at Salon Tuillo where Amanda was having her hair and makeup done. Then it was on to the Jerome Hotel to meet up with Scott getting ready for their morning wedding. By 11AM everyone had arrived at the amphitheater.

Scott and Amanda had arranged not to see each other before their ceremony and it worked out perfectly. Scott caught his first glimpse of Amanda as her father walked her up the path before about 35 of their friends and family. Amanda’s dog, Tonka, a boxer made a great ring bearer.

It was a beautiful summer morning with a few clouds passing over the ceremony which was following by a luncheon reception at the Pine Creek Cookhouse one valley over in the upper Castle Creek Valley near the silver mining ghost town of Ashcroft. The Pine Creek Cookhouse is legendary in the Roaring Fork Valley as a rustic restaurant with great food.

After the reception Amanda and Scott wanted to go play around and take a few pictures at Ashcroft which still has about 7 buildings standing.

We finished the afternoon off back at the Jerome Hotel in Aspen with cocktails in the world famous J Bar.

Alan and Cindy’s Brook Forest Inn Wedding

Alan and Cindy were married June 19 at The Brook Forest Inn near Evergreen, Colorado.

Alan has been a good friend for almost 20 years and I was excited when he called and asked if I would photograph their wedding. I’ve known Cindy for several years including a winter hut ski trip three years ago.

They had a simple wedding along a stream behind the Inn with about 60 guests, no bridal party but one really cute flower girl. One of Cindy’s good friends, Lois performed the ceremony.

It was very emotional for Alan as he held Cindy’s hands and looked into her eyes. He tried to hold back his tears but they came streaming down his face.

Their reception was held in the dinning room of the inn which was decorated in purple and white.
