It was harvest time for grapes while we were in Italy in September. The afternoon we arrived at Luisa and Luciano’s farm/vineyard in Cerreto Guidi, Tuscany, a local crew was busy harvesting their last load of grapes for the day.

A few days later, I visited our friends Daniele and Elena at Agriturismo La Colombaia, to document their grape harvest. Agriturimoes are both accommodation and working farm. Their winery, Santa Liberata, produces four different wines, including a tasty Chianti. Ten years ago we stayed at La Colombaia for two weeks and became good friends with the family.

During the harvest, Daniele worked with his crew and drove his tractor up and down the rows pulling a trailer. The workers would then hand-pick and fill the trailer with a couple tons of grapes that would then be hauled into town, where the winery is located. Harvesting grapes by hand is a dying tradition, as many of the vineyards are using machines to harvest the grapes, which is much faster, but not selective. Daniele is very picky about only using the best grapes for his wines.

Geri and I actually helped Luisa and Luciano’s family harvest about a ton of grapes in less than two hours. We will publish those pictures in another post about family life on their villa soon. Harvesting grapes by hand is a dying culture as many of the vineyards are using machines to harvest which is much faster but not selective. Daniele is very picky about only using the best grapes for his wines.
