Kent Meireis Wedding Photography Blog bio picture

Welcome to Kent Meireis Photography Blog!

I specialize in wedding photojournalism telling each story from beginning to end. After working as a newspaper staff photographer including 10 years with The Denver Post, I fell in love with photographing weddings and launched Kent Meireis Photography. I want my images to be honest. They should capture expressions, emotions and personalities with a distinct eye for content, light and contrast. Photography is how I communicate with others, how I tell stories that are timeless and truthful, preserving them for future generations. I see my photography as a collaboration - a visual conversation between myself and those who invite me into their lives. My style of photography is dependent on the willingness of those I photograph to allow me in, to be open for my camera. I am interested in recording the nuances that might be missed in this fast-paced world. What intrigues me most is the beauty in everyday life. Whether I am photographing a child, a family, or a wedding celebration; I am attempting to capture those simple, honest moments when the human spirit peeks through.

Mountaintop Matrimony – Ski Loveland’s 19th Annual Mass Wedding

Sunday, Valentine’s Day, I documented Ski Loveland’s 19th Annual Mountaintop Matrimony Mass Wedding. The ceremony was held at Ptarmigan Roost Cabin at 12,050 feet in elevation. The day started out cold with falling snow but before the noon ceremony, the sky began to clear and the winds relaxed. Still, getting married near the top of the Continental Divide in the middle of February isn’t for the faint of heart.

Tough Love: 10 easy pieces

Dancers perform in the street near The Packing House Center for the Arts.

Saturday I photographed a dance performance created by Lauren Simpson, the daughter of one of our neighbors . Also, Lauren’s step sister, Ellie, 9, performed in “the sister piece”. The program was designed and planned to be performed around Valentine’s Day, with love as the common thread.

The program began by asking the audience to go outside The Packing House Center for the Arts in north Denver. Then the dancers came out dressed as brides and groomsmen, piled into a car, drove down the street and danced their way back.

The building is a former meat packing plant near the stockyards and it’s still in an industrial neighborhood. Lauren used the neighborhood as the back drop pushing both the dancers and the audience to connect with the location, such as biker’s private club, below the art center.

Anythink – A new style of library

Doug Bates performs a fire dance.

Last Saturday I photographed the Grand Opening of Anythink Huron Street Library in Thornton, Colorado. Rangeview Library district in Adams County (north Denver) are a new style of library. The Anythink model was designed to help libraries remain relevant by offering more than just books. The brand celebrates imagination, play and interactivity and witched from the Dewey Decimal classification to a word base system.

The theme to the Anythink Huron Street Library opening was “A Celebration of Light.” From the light in the kids eyes who cut the grand opening ribbon to the light that flows into the brand new building. The opening event included a laser light show, fire dancing and graffiti light painting.

Cheers, Kent

Denver Christmas 2009

_MG_7354

For only the second time in the past 14 years, Geri and I stayed in Denver for Christmas. Geri’s sister, Melani flew in from Phoenix, Ariz. and our friends Paul and Margie arrived from Basalt, Colo. A couple of local friends, Mark and Neil, rounded out the holiday party.

Happy New Year, Kent

Happy Holiday’s everyone!

Click here to see a slideshow of our NYC adventures.

We started our holiday season with a ten-day trip to New York City. We stayed with Geri’s cousin Jeanne on the upper west side and our first dinner out was at Dinosaur Barbque in Harlem to celebrate Geri’s birthday.

The cugina’s (cousins) were into shopping at eclectic stores such as John Derian Company making what seemed like daily trips to the lower east side via subways and buses while I was having a blast photographing anything that struck my fancy. On one of the colder days we went to The Metropolitan Museum of Art to see an amazing photo exhibition, Robert Frank’s, ” The Americans”. Swiss-born Frank, made a cross-country road trip in 1955-56 documenting American life in the post-war era. “The Americans” was first published in the U.S. in 1959  and soon became recognized as a masterpiece of street photography. The exhibit is up though Jan. 3, 2010.

We also caught another photo exhibit “The Vanishing Continent” by a friend of mine, Seth Resnick. Seth has made three photography trips to Antarctica documenting the continent before it disappears. The exhibit hangs through Dec. 20th at the Glimmer Gallery, 140 Duane St.

One day, Geri and I visited our friend Rachel who works for The New York Times. Rachel gave us a tour of the building and we had lunch in their very nice cafeteria. We hadn’t seen Rachel since her wedding in Vail last September.

No trip to NYC would be complete without a walk though Central Park and this time we did it at sunset. Another evening we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge on a sunset stroll.

On Thanksgiving, I got up early to photograph the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. What a wonderful American tradition. New York is a great place to practice street photography and the parade is over the top (literally) with photo possibilities.

For our Thanksgiving dinner Jeanne’s friend Kack drove to us to Southbury, Connecticut. Jeanne’s mother and Geri’s aunt Eileen lives in Pomperaug Woods, a lifecare retirement community. We had a great visit and turkey dinner including Eileen’s famous cranberry relish.

Back in the City for the weekend,  we caught a couple of flea markets and lunched at Shake Shack a wonderful burger joint followed by an evening performance of “Twelfth Night” performed by a marionette puppet theater. Good thing we were in the front row since the puppets were less than a foot tall. Then we dined at Freemans a cozy restaurant at the end of an unused alley off the Bowery, where we celebrated Jeanne’s birthday.

On our last day in NYC, I decided I wanted to be on the water and visit both Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty.  It’s hard to believe there is a National Park in NYC and it’s a bargain for only $12.

Cheers, Kent
