A Black and white feral cats project I worked on with just about every cat wrangler in Flathead Valley.
Special thanks to Darcy the leader of KittyMOM’s Rescue for herding all the wranglers and cats!
Here’s Darcy’s recap of this enormous trapping
ALL IN A DAYS WORK! Last week KittyMOM’s Rescue got a call from a rural homeowner with a cat problem. When we checked we found many white cats with black spots and some kittens. We could see that the cats were well cared for but were multiplying rapidly! Something needed to be done quickly. We gathered some foster MOMs and volunteers and headed out there a couple days later with Susan, Bonnie, KittyMOM, CJ, Becky and Kent (with the magic camera) and 17 traps. We were greeted by a couple neighbors, Steve and Karen. As we set out traps, the hungry kitties were walking into them as fast as we could set them. Neighbor Steve offered his office to transfer them to carriers, so we could re- set traps again. And neighbor Karen, offered to neuter all the male cats at @Calm Animal Care where she is a vet. Finally at 10pm that night we had 24 adult cats and 11 kittens. In the morning only 2 of our traps were full. It looks like we had them all. We took all the females to Flathead Spay and Neuter Task Force and they did a wonderful job of fixing the females and ear tipping. It was important to us to identify the nursing Mothers so we could get them back with their 11 kittens that we were bottle feeding. There was only 2 nursing mothers and they were rapidly reunited with their babies at KittyMOM’s house. All the others were fixed and released back to the homeowner. They were all de wormed, vaccinated, nails trimmed and will now live long healthy lives! It takes a village and what we thought would take a couple weeks, only took 1 1/2 days. A big thank you goes to all of our helpers, plus Steve and Karen, and Calm Animal Care, Flathead Spay/Neuter Task Force and to Kent Meireis with his magic camera lens. And especially the homeowner for being responsible and wanting the best life for her kitties.
Trapping season is now over, as we would be leaving litters of kittens without Mothers. The time to trap is December, January and February before breeding season starts.
